It's not easy to keep alive the memory of a loved one who has passed away. We want to hold on to all that made them special to us, the wonderful things they did, the way they had of saying things, how they made us laugh, and why, when they died, we had tears in our eyes. And it's not just for our sakes that we want to remember them; it's also for the sake of their family and friends, and perhaps grandchildren not yet born.

Donald Joseph Montey, age 75, of Brandon, passed away at his home on Sunday, July 20, 2014. He was born in Fond du Lac on June 19, 1939, the son of Michael and Lillian (Raatz) Montey. Donnie worked at Ripon Foods for over 50 years and enjoyed making the cookies. He also enjoyed working on machines and excavating.
Donnie is survived by four siblings, Cordilia “Corky” (David) Thiel of Ripon, Gordon (Gerda) Montey of Ripon, Cathleen Gundlach of Marshall, Michael (Kathleen) Montey of Rosendale; his Aunt Tootie Weishaar of Ripon; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Gaile Gundlach.
Per the wishes of the Montey family, no services will be held at this time.
Alfred August Zabel, age 96, formerly of Fairwater, passed away on July 18, 2014 at Kindred Hearts in Green Lake with his family by his side. He was born on October 18, 1917 in Green Lake County, the son of August and Jennie (Daane) Zabel. He was united in marriage to Edna Kubehl on September 24, 1944 at Zion Lutheran Church in Fairwater, the church where they have been life-long members. Alfred’s faith in Christ helped him to face all of the joys, sorrows and challenges in his life. He was a member of the church choir, served as church President Council and was a Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent. He served on the Township of Metomen Board for 8 years and was a member of the Harmony Kings Barbershop for over 20 years. Alfred was a life-long farmer on his own farms in the Fairwater area. He loved listening to music with his wife Edna, and enjoyed playing his guitar and harmonica at the same time.
Alfred is survived by his two daughters, Karen (Edward) Ellsworth of Ripon, Faye (John Samuelson) Zabel of Markesan; two sons, Mark (Erin) Zabel of Greeley CO, Barry (Beth) Zabel of Ripon; 9 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; one sister Delores Austin; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Edna; two brothers, Clarence and Bernard; and two granddaughters, Danielle and Alyse Zabel.
Funeral services for Alfred will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at Zion Lutheran Church in Fairwater with Pastor Shari Routh officiating. Friends and family may visit at the Church on Saturday, July 26, 2014 from 9:00am until the time of the services. Burial will follow at the Fairwater Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Agnesian Hospice or Zion Lutheran Church.

Melford N. Sorensen, age 93, of Ripon, passed away on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at Prairie Place in Ripon. Melford was born in 1921 to Sam and Dorothy (Pope) Sorensen in the Town of Lind, Waupaca County. He graduated from Waupaca High School in June of 1939. He attended the University Of Wisconsin College Of Agriculture for two years, majoring in Dairy Science and Dairy Cattle Genetics. In 1941 Melford moved to Green Lake and was employed by the Green Lake County Dairy Herd Improvement Association as a supervisor for the University of Wisconsin. Melford married Myrtle Spievogel on May 23, 1942 at the Town of Lind Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waupaca, Wisconsin.
In 1942 Melford enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Force and served 36 months on Guadalcanal and other areas of the southwest Pacific as a Staff Sergeant in the Army Airways Communication Squadron. In route to Guadalcanal, Mel’s convoy was attacked by a Japanese submarine. The squadron was harassed by “Washing Machine Charlie” with night time bombing raids on Henderson Field.
At the end of WWII, Melford trained at the University of Wisconsin as an insemination Technician and served Green Lake, Fond du Lac, and Winnebago Counties for East Central Breeders/Select Sires. After serving for 45 years, he completed over 150,000 first service cows, a record for Select Sires.
Mel and Mert loved to travel and vacationed all over the United States, in Europe connecting with relatives in Denmark, Australia and in New Zealand where Mel visited during WWII. Mel competed in horseshoe throwing competitions throughout Wisconsin. He and Mert loved to dance, play cards, socialize with friends, and spend time with family. He enjoyed sports, particularly baseball. Mel and Mert were active members of Grace Lutheran Church in Ripon throughout their marriage.
Melford is survived by his children: Sandra Sorensen, Surprise, AZ, Jackie (Ed) Belka, Eau Claire, Richard (Julie) Sorensen, Ripon, and Peter (Mary) Sorensen, De Pere. He has eight grandchildren: Stacey (Tim) Holleran, Smyna, GA, Stuart (Heather) Schrader, Plymouth, MN, Samantha (Jason) Herheim, De Forest, Andrea (Greg) Van Buren, East Troy, Andrew Sorensen, Marinette, Justin (Carissa) Sorensen, Ripon, Nicholas (Danielle) Sorensen, De Pere, and Kate Sorensen, De Pere. Mel is survived by seven great-grand children. He is also survived by his sister in law, Helen Sorensen, Madison. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Myrtle, and his brother, Merwyn.
Funeral services for Mel will be held on Friday, June 27, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, 430 W Griswold St., Ripon, with Rev. Clay Salmela officiating. Friends and Family may visit at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be at Liberty Prairie Cemetery, Pickett. The family would like to thank the staff of Prairie Place CBRF for their wonderful care of Mel the past three years.
Marilyn Ruth Stollfus, age 81, of Pickett, went to heaven on Saturday, April 19, 2014 with her family by her side. She was born on June 7, 1932 in Ripon, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Morris) Morris. She graduated from Ripon High School, Class of 1951. Marilyn was united in marriage to Arlon Stollfus on April 19, 1952 in the First Congregational Church- UCC of Ripon. He then preceded her in death in November of 1991. Marilyn was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of North Fond du Lac, the Tops Club and Friends for Fitness. She was a Poll worker for many years. She loved taking her two dogs Jenny and Toby for long walks down to the neighbor’s woods. She spent a lot of time with her three grandchildren on the farm and shared many good times together. She also loved to read, go bowling and play cards with all of her friends.
She is survived by her son, Charles (Lisa) Stollfus of Pickett; two daughters, Christine (Donn) Wright of Green Lake, Cindy (Michael) Johnson of Pickett; three grandchildren, Ryan, Christopher and Joshua Stollfus; two sisters, Joanne Adamski of Ripon, Phyllis (Richard) Kempfer of Ripon; two brothers, Elroy (Becky) Morris of Neshkoro, Joe (Linda) Morris of Ripon; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and dear friends. Marilyn is preceded in death by her parents, husband Arlon, sister Miriam Balda, brother Milton Morris, and brothers-in-law Sylvester Adamski and James Balda.
A Memorial Service for Marilyn will be held at 12:00 PM on Thursday, April 24, 2014, at St. Paul Lutheran Church- Wels, 1010 Adams Ave, North Fond du Lac with Pastor Thomas Behnke and Pastor Michael Kampman officiating. Friends and family may visit at the church on Thursday from 10:00 AM until the time of the services. Inurnment will be held at the Village of Rosendale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Marilyn’s name.
Carolyn J. Knaub, age 74, of Green Lake, WI, passed away on Thursday, April 17, 2014 at Kindred Hearts Memory Care Center in Green Lake, WI surrounded by her family. She was born on January 14, 1940 in Milwaukee, the daughter of Roland and Edith (Farmer) Biesel. She graduated from Washington High School in Milwaukee and was a member of Abiding Savior Lutheran Church. Carolyn was united in marriage to Bruce Knaub in Milwaukee on August 12, 1961. She enjoyed golfing, skiing, gardening, bowling and ballroom dancing.
She is survived by her husband Bruce Knaub of Brown Deer; three sons, Marc (Emily) Knaub of East Troy, Chris Knaub of Germantown, and Jeff Knaub of Brookfield; two daughters, Bonnie (Frank) Wiencek of Mequon, and Shari (John) Behm of Berlin; six grandchildren, Kaitlin Holme, Kendra Knaub, Heather Behm, Jacob Knaub, Matthew and Maggie Wiencek; her brother, Roger (Joan) Biesel of Kentucky; and her sister, Janet Sturgis of Oklahoma. She is preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law Don Sturgis.
A private Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a Memorial Fund has been established with the Alzheimer’s Association in her name. The family of Carolyn would like to extend a special Thank You to Generations Hospice and the staff at Kindred Hearts Memory Care Center for their wonderful care and dedication during this difficult time.
Mildred “Millie” Kranz, age 78, of Ripon, WI, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Fountainview Care Center in Ripon, WI with her family by her side. She was born on July 30, 1935 in Friendship, WI, the daughter of Anton and Mildred (Lampheer) Dahlke. She was united in marriage to Wayne Kranz Sr. on August 10, 1951 in Iowa. He preceded her in death on January 7, 1999. Millie’s most prized passions were Bowling Tournaments and the Dallas Cowboys. She enjoyed crocheting, baking, cooking, spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, going to casinos and the EAA. She supported the Ripon High School Football games and played Women’s Softball for many years.
She is survived by her three sons: Wayne Jr. (Fatima) Kranz of Algonquin, IL; Mark (Special Friend MaryAnn) Kranz of Ripon, WI; Jeff (Connie) Kranz of Ripon, WI; two daughters: Deb (Steve) Stollfuss of Ripon, WI; Tammy (Roy) Erickson of Brandon, WI; 14 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; one sister Cordelia Davis of Ripon, WI; brother-in-law Jerry (Joann) Hohler of North Fond du Lac, WI; sister-in-law Sarah (Dick) Bartoli of Mayville, WI; and special friends: Jan Ohlrich and Judy Kranz. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Wayne Sr., five brothers, two sisters and one grandson.
Funeral services for Millie will be held on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at 1:00PM at Divine Passage Funeral Home, 175 N Douglas Street, Ripon, WI. Roy Erickson will be officiating. Friends and family may visit at the funeral home on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 from 4:00PM to 6:00PM and also on Thursday from 12:00PM until the time of the service. Burial will be held in the Garden of the Cross Cemetery in Ripon, WI. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the American Cancer Society are appreciated. Eileen (Peschke) Gaab, age 88, of Ripon, WI, passed away on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at Prairie Place CBRF in Ripon, WI with her family by her side. She was born in Ripon, WI on December 11, 1925, the daughter of Frank and Edith (Kaiser) Peschke. Eileen was united in marriage to Henry Gaab on December 22, 1943 in Seattle, Washington. He preceded her in death on January 17, 2011. She worked as an Office Manager for several years at Black Hawk Publishing in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were her pride and joy. Any time spent with them was highly treasured.
She is survived by one son Michael (Elaine) Gaab of Bangor, WI; one daughter Deborah (Ronald) Wilson of Sheboygan, WI; five grandchildren Jennifer Gaab, Joe Gaab, Deanna (Daniel) Radtke, Jaimie (Galen Smith) Wilson, Brooke (Steven) Lilyquist; two great grandchildren Cody Radtke and Adam Radtke; one sister Carol Steinkraus of Beaver Dam, WI; and Special friends Connie Ruge and Ann Simon. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Henry, son Frank Gaab, and daughter-in-law Janet Gaab.

Leo “Lee” Schwartz, age 62, of Princeton, WI passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at his home with his family by his side. He has born on April 12, 1951 in Ripon, WI the son of Leo and Gertrude (Thiel) Schwartz. Lee graduated from Montello High School and worked at Speed Queen for many years. He was united in marriage to his beloved wife San Juanita Martinez on April 3, 1973 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Montello. Lee was a member of the Montello Rod and Gun Club and loved Sporting Clay Trap Shooting. He was an avid hunter and fisher. Lee enjoyed fixing cars growing up and made his own Hot Rods. His 1960 Chevy Impala was his prized possession.
Lee is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, San Juanita of Princeton; son Harry (Lori) Schwartz of Colorado; daughter Julie (Juan) Schreiber of Waupun; sister Kathleen (Mike) Brown of Oxford; three grandchildren: Cynthia Schreiber, Willie and Katie Schwartz; many nieces, nephews dear friends. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral Services will be held at St John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Montello on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at 2:00PM with Pastor Peter Zietlow officiating. Prudence Anne Giffey, age 85 died peacefully on Sunday, September
29, 2013, at Greenway Manor Nursing Home in Spring Green, WI. She was born on February 20, 1928, in Sheboygan County to Neil Victor and Monica Margaret (Sullivan) Giffey, and moved with her family to grow up on her parents’ dairy farm in the Town of Springvale, Fond du Lac County.
Prudence graduated from Fond du Lac Senior High School, and received a two-year rural school teaching degree in 1948 from Oshkosh State Teachers College. As a young woman in the 1940s and ‘50s, she and her girlfriends drove across country to visit and camp in national parks. After teaching in one-room rural schools in Wisconsin, she moved to California to teach in suburban Los Angeles schools. She earned a Bachelors Degree in Education at California State University-Los Angeles, and retired in 1987 after teaching 35 years in the Charter Oaks School District.
In California, she worked as a volunteer with theater companies, taught youths in her largely Latino church community, and lived with and cared for her mother for years before moving to Spring Green in 1994. Prudence was a gardener and athlete favoring bicycling, golf, basketball and tennis. She was a gifted amateur writer and lover of poetry and music. Prudence performed for many years with the Gregorian Schola of Los Angeles chant group, including a tour with performances in France. She also traveled to Ireland and Germany.
Toward the end of her teaching career, Prudence was diagnosed with serious sleep disorders which were previously undiagnosed. She enrolled in a potentially dangerous
program for narcolepsy and cataplexy, and carefully documented her experiences in the hope of advancing treatment for other people suffering from similar sleep disorders.
Prudence is survived by her brothers Neil (Janet) Giffey of Dodgeville, WI; Pierce Giffey of Appleton, WI; and David (Nancy) Giffey of Arena, WI; her nieces and nephews Anne Giffey, Thomas Giffey, Michelle Giffey, and Timothy Giffey; step-nephews Michael and David Goodfriend; and cousins. She is preceded in death by her parents, and sister-in-law Rose Marie Giffey.
Prudence received the Catholic sacrament of anointing from Fr. Mike Resop, pastor at St. John the Evangelist Church, Spring Green. Funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at 11:00am at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, Fond du Lac Street, Ripon, WI with Father Robert Fictum officiating. Family and friends may visit at the church from 10:00am until the time of the funeral mass. Interment will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, Township of Ripon. Memorial donations may be made in Prudence's name to the Environmental Defense Fund, or to Greenpeace Fund, Inc.

Carol Jean Spiglanin (nee Dahse), age 69, of Ripon, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at Michalene’s in Ripon, WI. She was born on December 24, 1943 in Racine, WI the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth (Mandli) Dahse. Carol was united in marriage to John Spiglanin on September 26, 1966 in Racine, WI. He preceded her in death in September of 1996. Carol worked as a Clerk for Western Publishing Company in Racine, WI for 32 years and then moved to Ripon, WI.
Carol is survived by her daughter Theresa Mitchell of Montevallo, AL; three granddaughters: Amanda Hemm of Racine, WI, Brittany Radtke of Ripon, WI, Nikole Radtke of Montevallo, AL; two great grandchildren: Cadence and Emerlyn Karst; two sisters: Shirley (Richard) Shallenbarger of Woodstock, IL, Beverly McNeil of Racine, WI; brother Edward (Diane) Dahse of Racine, WI; cousin Geri Hall of Princeton, WI. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband John, and sister Betty Ann Dahse.

Kenneth H. Slate, age 74, of Ripon, passed away on Friday, May 24, 2013 at Fountainview Care Center in Ripon, WI. Kenneth was born on December 11, 1938 in Chicago, Illinois the son of William Sr. and Dorothy (Franks) Slate. He was united in marriage to Rosalie Fletcher on October 28, 1968 in Waukegan, Illinois. He graduated from Fond du Lac High School and became a Radio Technician for many years. He was a member of the Top Hats Motorcycle Club, Auxiliary Police Force, Green Fox Radio Club, and Ripon Area Computer Club. He was also a member of the Amateur Radio Club; his call signs were W9ITW and N0HIT. He loved working with radios and being a DJ in Fond du Lac, but most of all, he loved watching Doctor Who.
Kenneth is survived by his loving wife, Rosalie; two sons, Kyn (Jodi) Anthony of Oshkosh and David Slate of Ripon; one daughter, Samantha Anthony of Fond du Lac; one brother, William (Joan) Slate of Markesan; many grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Patricia Anthony; and one brother John Slate.

Patricia M. Smith, age 72, of Green Lake, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 in her home. She was born on August 29, 1940 in Preston County, West Virginia, the daughter of Sylvester “Chief” and Maxine (Nee Griffith) Krupinski. Pat was united in marriage to Jack Smith in Terra Alta, West Virginia on July 7, 1962. Pat graduated college Summa Cum Laude from Fairmont State University. She then became a High School Social Studies teacher and drama coach before becoming a fabulous housewife, mother, grandmother and active member of the community. She was a talented musician and singer, leading a jazz trio in her college years followed by choir member for the Green Lake Federated Church. Pat formerly served on the Green Lake School Board and was a member of the Dartford Educational Club. She was an avid watercolor hobbyist, home decorator, collector, and hosted many themed parties with her enormous network of friends. She loved nature, gardening, football and being with her beloved cats Scottie and Max.
Pat is survived by her son Scott Smith of New Glarus, WI; daughters: Sherry Smith of New York, NY and Laura Wallenfang of Middleton, WI; sons-in-law Keith Peterson of New Glarus, WI and Kevin Wallenfang of Middleton, WI; grandchildren Heidi and Danielle Wallenfang; sisters Margaret Moore of Bridgeport, WV; Christine Ruppenthal of Bruceton Mills, WV and Susan Ice of Martinsburg, WV; other relatives and many friends. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Jack Smith in 1986, and her companion Alex Schmidt in 2006.
A Memorial Service to celebrate her life will be held at the
Green Lake Federated Church at
3:00 pm on Friday, July 19, with Rev. Karen Gygax-Rodriguez officiating. Following the Memorial Service will be an Open House at Pat’s home in Green

Carol A. Drefahl, age 68, of Ripon, passed away on Wednesday May 8, 2013 at the Markesan Resident Home in Markesan, WI.
Carol was born on August 29, 1944 in Milwaukee, WI the daughter of Joe and Irene (Wojcik) Zepezauer. She enjoyed drinking wine and spending time with her family and
friends. She always had
animals in her life and loved spending time and caring for them.
Carol is survived by her daughter Laurie (Tom) Engelhardt of Ripon, WI; sister Geralyn Schoenborn of Port Washington, WI; nephew Joseph Schoenborn of Saukville, WI;
special friends Al

Geraldine Freide Morgan, age 90, of Ripon, passed away on Good Friday, March 29, 2013 at Fountainview Care Center in Ripon.
Geraldine was born on January 12, 1923 in Baraboo, WI the daughter of Melvin and Freide Price. Geraldine attended Baraboo area schools and then moved to Portage, WI. In 1943 she married Clarence W. Morgan in Portage, WI. With her husband overseas fighting in WW II, Geraldine moved to Ripon and worked at Speed Queen until the end of the war. Geraldine then became a homemaker and started her family, and worked part time as a domestic. With kids in school, Geraldine returned to the workplace and was employed at Smith’s Laundry and Dry Cleaners until the business closed in 1973. Geraldine then was employed by A.F.K. Corporation in Ripon until she retired in 1988. In 1989 she traveled to Europe with her husband Clarence and traveled the same path of her husband during WW II. Clarence preceded her in death in 1999. Her passions were her family, reading, watching Westerns and the Green Bay Packers. Geraldine was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary American Legion in Ripon.
Geraldine is survived by her son Calvin (Dianne) of Princeton; her sister Betty Liptow of Ripon; her grandchildren: Michelle Zeatlow of Kettle River, MN; Nicholas (Tracy E.) Morgan of Knoxville, TN; Tracy Lynn Morgan of Harriman, TN; Kelly Bigalow of Fond du Lac, WI; Jennifer Standoff of Strasburg, CO; Mary (Cole) Lane of Austin, MN; and her special friend Dave Zeatlow of Ripon. She is also survived by many great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends. Geraldine is preceded by her parents, her husband Clarence, her daughter Velva, her brother Roger, 2 sisters Dorothy and Elaine, grand daughter Laurann and grandson Thomas Max.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 6th at 1:30 p.m. at Divine Passage Funeral Home, 175 N. Douglas Street, Ripon with Rev. Joshua Pegram officiating.
