Barbara Smith Doherty, age 86, of Green Lake, passed away on Sunday, October 11, 2015 at Fountainview Care Center in Ripon, WI. She was born on March 29, 1929 in Pardeeville, WI the daughter of Ralph and Evangeline (Leghorn) Smith. She graduated from Green Lake High School, Class of 1947 and attended Oshkosh College receiving her Master’s Degree in Education. Barbara was united in marriage to Clarence “Mike” Doherty on July 14, 1973 in West Bend, WI. He preceded her in death on June 26, 1997.
Barbara was an Elementary teacher for over 40 years. She began her teaching career in rural Green Lake and Fond du Lac County schools and retired from Hartford Common School District after 25 years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 84 years; her mother started paying her dues at the age of 2. Barbara volunteered at the Dartford Historical Society for many years and was on the Board of Directors. She was an active member of the Friends of the Caestecker Public Library, and Green Lake Literacy Council. She enjoyed knitting, reading, traveling with her late husband Mike and listening to music of the 1950’s and 60’s.
Barbara is survived by her niece, Patricia (Paul) Loberg; nephews, Thomas (Yvonne) Smith, James (Jane) Smith; Great nieces: Taylor Toros, Melinda Smith, Amanda Smith; Great nephews, Wade Loberg, Vincent Smith, Eric Smith, Matthew Smith; and special friends, Dick and Mary. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mike; brothers, Leslie R Smith and Randall K Smith; and sister-in-law, Joyce Smith.
Graveside services for Barbara will be held at 11:30am on Saturday, October 17, 2015 at Dartford Cemetery in Green Lake. Memorials may be directed to the Green Lake American Legion; Dartford Historical Society; or Caestecker Library.
