Norman Rasske, age 92, passed away Saturday, June 16, 2018 at Whispering Pines Nursing Home. He was born June 7, 1926, in Rosendale, first son of William and Erna (Schroeder) Rasske. He was baptized and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in Rosendale, WI. In 1944, he graduated from Rosendale High School with 22 classmates. Norm worked as a hired hand for $1/day for a neighboring farmer. He then enlisted in the US Army in 1946, serving as an Army paratrooper in Japan & the Philippines. He traveled up the Yangtze River in China. In 1948, he was honorably discharged from Army Camp Stoneman in California.
He met his future wife, Nola Kearley on roller skates at the Fairwater roller rink! On September 17, 1950, they married at Markesan Methodist Church. After they were married they settled in Ripon, WI in an army barracks apartment. Norm worked with his parents at the Ripon greenhouses, but when they retired he moved with his young family to Markesan to farm. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Ripon. They raised four children, Gregory, Steven, Jane, and Anne. The family returned to Ripon in 1969 to build the Ripon Lawn and Garden Center. He grew spring bedding plants, worked landscaping jobs and made lovely Christmas wreaths and roping. He sold this business in 1987 which was his "first" retirement. After retirement, he tended several apple orchards and continued making Christmas wreaths from his garage. This kept him busy from morning to night until just three years ago, when he "retired" again. Norm loved his work! He enjoyed being the "crew chief" of the hot air balloon trolley with his son, Gregory. In 2006, he participated in the WWII Honor Flight and enjoyed seeing the Washington memorials.
Norm is survived by his wife of 67 years, Nola, of Ripon; his sons, Gregory (Susan) and their son Gregg of Ripon, WI and Steven (Peri) and their children Carolyn, Kristen and Daniel, of Mahtomedi, MN; his daughters, Jane and her daughter Natalya, of Vadnais Heights, MN and Anne (Nicholas) Riegert and their daughters, Elle and Bridget, of Pewaukee, WI; his sisters Rosalie Jess and Gloria (Robert) Kelm; his brother Lynn Rasske; and numerous other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his infant son, Mark Rasske; parents, William and Erna; sister, Naomi; and numerous relatives and friends.
